Berry characterisation of cv shiraz according to position on the rachis
2016
In this study, characterisation of the physical and compositional parameters of berries located in different positions on the rachis of Shiraz/R99 bunches was done. Berries were divided according to position on the rachis (apical, median and basal) and berry weight, resulting in four berry weight classes, averaging 0.86 g, 1.29 g, 1.74 g and 2.26 g and 0.74, 1.18, 1.59 and 2.09 cm3, respectively. The berries were analysed individually. The fresh weight of the berries comprised approximately 4% seeds, 20% skin and 76% flesh. Different percentage distributions were found for each class of berry weight and according to position on the rachis. From the top to the bottom rachis position, an incr…
Fruit size in relation to competition for resources: A common model shared by two species and several genotypes grown under contrasted carbohydrate l…
2012
International audience; Fruit size is one important criterion of fruit external quality affecting consumer acceptance. The effects of seed number on fruit size in two fleshy fruits, grape and tomato, of different genotypes and grown under distinct carbohydrate availability levels were analyzed with a model. The two-parameter model described within-fruit resource competition and was able to well represent the commonly observed decrease in fresh weight per seed along with the increase in number of seeds, regardless of species, genotypes, and carbohydrate levels that were evaluated in this study. However, carbohydrate levels largely modified the correlation between seed number and fresh weight…
The occurrence of Dechlorane Plus and related norbornene-based flame retardants in Baltic wild salmon (Salmo salar)
2015
Twenty five Baltic wild salmon (Salmo salar) specimens were analysed for the content of Dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs). Out of the ten analysed DRCs, seven compounds were detected in the muscle tissues of salmon, including Dechlorane (Dec) 602, Dec 603, syn- and anti-stereoisomers of Dechlorane Plus (DP), Dechlorane Plus monoadduct (1,3-DPMA), hexachlorocyclopentadienyl-dibromocyclooctane (DBHCTD), and Mirex. The concentrations of Dec 604 and two DP dechlorinated compounds - decachloropentacyclooctadecadiene (Cl10DP) and undecachloropentacyclooctadecadiene (Cl11DP) - were below the limit of detection in all samples. The aggregated concentrations of DRCs (ΣDRC) were in the range of 551-…
Rice protoplasts isolated directly from mature-embryo-derived calli
1996
Mature-embryo-derived calli of japonica rice (Oryza sativa L) Taipei 309 were used for replicated protoplast isolation experiments. Six out of nine callus lines produced protoplasts with satisfactory yield of 5.20×106–8.96×106 protoplasts/g FW (fresh weight). The remaining three callus lines initiated from seeds of cryopreserved-callus-derived plants had rooty calli, resulting in low yield of protoplasts and a large number of isolated banana-shape intact cells. Viability of protoplasts ranged 87.46%–94.15%. The average size of protoplasts was 207.49–379.04 μm2 in different callus lines. Comparitive experiments were also carried out using both calli and suspension culture cells for protoplas…
Effectiveness of glycinebetaine foliar application in relieving salt stress symptoms in two turf-grasses
2014
Salinity is one of the problems that has to be dealt with in turf-grass management, due both to restrictions in freshwater use for landscape irrigation and exposition to salt stress in coastal areas. This has led to the need to select salinity tolerant genotypes and test management practices, such as the application of osmoprotectants, in order to maintain turf quality at acceptable costs. We compared the effects of irrigation with 600 mM NaCl and glycinebetaine (GB) application for 8 weeks on pot-grown weeping alkaligrass (Puccinellia distans (L.) Parl.) and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). We selected two easily assessable parameters, total clippings fresh weight and chlorophyll…
Occurrence of Brominated Persistent Organic Pollutants (PBDD/DFs, PXDD/DFs, and PBDEs) in Baltic Wild Salmon (Salmo salar) and Correlation with PCDD/…
2013
The contamination profiles of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs), dibenzofurans (PBDFs), diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and mixed monobromo/chloro dibenzo-p-dioxins (PXDDs) and dibenzofurans (PXDFs) were determined in the tissue of Baltic wild salmon and compared with those of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), dibenzofurans (PCDFs), and biphenyls (PCBs). Out of the analyzed PXDD/DFs, only the 3-B-2,7,8-triCDF was detected (in the concentration range of 0.039-0.075 pg g(-1) fresh weight (f.w.)). The toxic equivalents (TEQs) for analyzed PBDD/DFs (0.074-0.142 pg TEQ g(-1) f.w.) were found to contribute on average 2.1% to the total PCDD/DF-PBDD/DF-TEQ. The total concentrations of 27 P…
In vitro culture of albedo tissue from fruits of Citrus sinensis cv. Washington Navel: Effect of fruit age and orange juice
1994
SUMMARYCallus from citrus fruit explants has been used to study different aspects of fruit physiology. However, growth responses of callus derived from citrus fruit tissues are not always comparable with those of intact fruit; there are, for example, differences in nutritional requirements. Results with tissues cultivated in vitro seem to depend on a variety of environmental and internal factors. In the present work albedo tissue from fruits of Citrus sinensis cv. Washington Navel of different age has been used as a source of explants. The growth (fresh weight) of the calli was dependent on the age of the fruit from which the explants were taken, as well as on the addition of orange juice t…
Elsholtzia blandaBenth: New Citral-rich Chemotypes from India
2012
The essential oils of the previously un-investigated aerial parts of Elsholtzia blanda were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. The yields of the oil were found to be 0.93 and 1.70% on fresh weight basis. A total of 25 compounds, representing 82.8% and 87.9% of the oil, were identified. The main compounds were geranial (43.5%–48.8%), neral (31.7%–34.7%), E-isocitral (1.2%–0.1%), and caryophyllene oxide (1.6%–0.7%). These two cultivars have the potential to compete with commercial citral oils.
Hydroponic Lettuce Cultivation Using Organic Nutrient Solution from Aerobic Digested Aquacultural Sludge
2021
The aim of this study was to demonstrate how aquacultural sludge can be processed and utilized as an organic nutrient solution (ONS) for hydroponic lettuce production. By using a previous developed method, approximately 80% of the processed sludge was reclaimed as a clear, nutrient-rich solution. The performance of the recovered nutrient solution on lettuce growth was assessed in a nutrient film hydroponic system. The results were compared to the results obtained using a conventional nutrient solution (CNS). Yield, fresh weight, water consumption, and nutrient and heavy metal content in leaf tissue were measured. In spite of a 16% lower average fresh weight obtained in ONS compared to the w…
